An aspect that is tragically missing in the world of education is that of a personalized learning experience for the teacher. One in which they are able to receive support through the implementation phase of their development. This is almost comically ironic that professional learning has still not made this transition. For years, teachers have been expected to differentiate their lessons, model for their students, provide feedback, and help students set their own learning goals.
Why have teachers not been provided the same learning opportunities that they have been expected to give their students?
If research has proven that learning occurs best with these types of characteristics, it is such an injustice for our professional educators that they are still expected to learn from keynote speakers and static PD sessions. Now it is completely unreasonable for a school to hire a private "teaching tutor" for every educator that can provide these types of learning experiences in an ongoing fashion, and here lies the beauty of collaboration amongst teachers. Teachers have strengths and many teachers are willing to share their knowledge and experience with others.
By creating a collaborative culture among teachers, goal-setting, modeling, and personalized learning can be accessible to every staff member in the school. Teachers can be engaged as givers and receivers of professional learning, where the content is specific and applicable to all those involved.
