The Journey Continues

Updated: Feb 12, 2020

At the end of the 2018-19 school year, as I was completing my second year as an Innovation & Learning Specialist, I had a defining realization.

Now, this wasn't a whimsical, passing thought or an impulsive internal reaction, it was a peaceful resolution and a call to action: it was time for me to further my education. I felt that for me to be more efficient and more effective in my role, I needed to develop my skill set and be a more proactive learner for the sake of my craft.

I didn't know it at the time, but I was being affected and drive by my "why." As detailed in my Learning Manifesto, my "why" is two-fold:

  1. Prepare students, both academically and beyond academics, for life beyond the classroom

  2. Help teachers maximize their teaching ability and continuously nurture their passion for education

The thought of fulfilling these goals energizes my spirit and creates a sense of urgency to work hard every day.

Knowing your why helps you walk in and towards your purpose.

The classrooms that I have both taught in and supported do not look like the same classrooms I sat in as a student. Furthermore, this statement could not be more true about the Digital Learning and Leading program at Lamar University. After enrolling as a graduate student, I quickly realized I could not operate this program in the same way I had operated in my previous classes. I would need to adjust my approach and adopt a Growth Mindset, which prioritizes genuine learning and overcoming challenges more than proving intelligence with top grades. Relieving myself from the pressure of performance will always be a battle. But a growth mindset will allow me to take risks, embrace setbacks, and engage with the content in applicable ways.

The COVA model will practically allow me to navigate this process. Directly applying my learning to my work setting will create an authentic learning experience and I will document the journey along the way via this ePortfolio.

Of course, one cannot embark on such a journey without a support system. I plan to utilize several professional learning networks for guidance throughout this program. These will also serve as another vehicle to give voice to the education I receive and the impact I hope to make.

The course has been mapped, the supplies have been packed and the mission is clear. What began as a defining realization is now a plan set in motion. With my "why" as the wind at my back, the journey continues...
