Aligning Outcomes, Assessment & Activities
When I tell my 4-year old son, "It's time to go, head to the car," his guaranteed, immediate response is, "Where are we going?" That is the question all students are asking when it comes to their learning, whether they know it or not. Students want and need to know the ultimate destination and how the activities they participate in and the knowledge they seek to acquire contribute to the overall goal.
This also true for adults, especially teachers. When educators are presented with a potential change to their regular routines, a clear goal is necessary. My Innovation Plan centers around the idea that teachers must create significant learning environments and implement Outcomes-Based Education in order to facilitate deeper learning for 21st-century students.
Using Fink's (n.d.) guide, I have designed a course for educators on implementing a Project-Based Learning unit and a blended learning environment. This course feels very non-traditional as I will work closely with teachers as an instructional coach. The goal is for teachers to create the very environment that they will experience as a learner. Teachers will begin their planning process by identifying a unit goal for their students and create projects that allow for exploration, divergent learning, and an authentic learning experience.
